Speaking at the PAP branch office at Toa Payoh West-Thomson, Gan reflected on her tenure since 2020.

“For the past five years, I’ve done my best to walk the ground, helping the vulnerable residents, build the team and in also creating a new Marymount identity,” she said.

She described her journey as deeply meaningful and expressed hope to continue working with Marymount residents and fellow Singaporeans.

Gan added, “I hope that together, we can make every day a good day in Marymount and create a bright future for Singaporeans.”

Gan, 50, is currently the Minister of State for Education and Manpower. She entered politics in 2020 and won her first contest with 55.04 percent of the vote, defeating Ang Yong Guan of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).

Before entering politics, Gan served in the Singapore Armed Forces, becoming the first woman Brigadier-General in 2015.

She joined the SAF in 1993 and was Chief of Staff, Air Staff, for the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

She stepped down from the military in March 2020, joining NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute briefly before contesting the general election that year.

Marymount SMC, carved out before the 2020 election, remains unchanged in its boundaries.

The ward now has 23,219 registered voters, slightly fewer than the 23,439 recorded in the previous election.

On 17 April, the Progress Singapore Party announced that Jeffrey Khoo will be their candidate for Marymount SMC in this year’s contest.

Khoo, 56, previously contested in West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in 2020.

That contest was one of the closest in the election, with the PAP securing the GRC with 51.68 percent of the vote.

A father of three, Khoo currently serves as the CEO of a regional risk consulting firm. He has also held leadership positions with the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS) for the past 15 years.

Khoo addressed the possibility of a three-way fight in Marymount, noting that the People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR) has shown interest in contesting the ward.

PSP is currently in discussions with PAR to avoid splitting the opposition vote. “I think it will pan out well,” Khoo said when asked about the progress of these talks.

Singaporeans are set to vote on 3 May in the 14th General Election since the country’s independence.
