SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong unveiled a S$3 value meal vending machine at Block 326B Sumang Walk on 25 May 2025—the first to be introduced in Punggol.
In a Facebook post, he shared a video showing how the machine works.
He wrote, “Bought a set of curry rice, heated it up using the attached microwave oven and served it to one of our residents. She was thrilled and gave a thumbs up.”
Gan expressed hopes to introduce more of such machines across the estate to offer affordable, accessible food options for residents.
This project follows a similar initiative launched earlier in March in Chua Chu Kang.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, that rollout was a joint effort between the South West Community Development Council and Select Group, which provided 24/7 access to low-cost meals.
Gan, who was then serving as MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC, launched the pilot together with South West District Mayor Low Yen Ling.
Public Reception: Mixed Reactions Online
While some welcomed the effort as a timely response to rising food prices, reactions online were split.
Residents dealing with escalating costs at nearby food outlets expressed appreciation for the low-cost meals and the convenience of having them available round-the-clock.
Concerns About Health and Nutrition
However, others were critical of the initiative’s nutritional value and sustainability.
Several users pointed out that most inexpensive meals tend to be high in carbohydrates and low in overall nutritional quality.
Hygiene and Sustainability Issues
Concerns also emerged around the cleanliness and maintenance of the machines.
Commenters warned of the risk of pests and vandalism, especially with unattended microwaves in public areas.
Wider Debate: Temporary Fix or Real Solution?
Some felt the effort missed the bigger picture, noting that temporary, low-cost solutions don’t address the wider issue of high living costs.
As the programme expands, the vending machine scheme highlights a balancing act between convenience, affordability, and public expectations on health and long-term viability.
