SINGAPORE: Four people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Redhill Close during the early hours of 28 August 2025.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted at about 1.15 am to a blaze at Block 68 Redhill Close.

When firefighters arrived, the living room of a fourth-floor unit was on fire. SCDF deployed a water jet to extinguish the flames, which were confined to the living room.

Firefighters rescued three occupants from a bedroom. They were conscious but assessed for smoke inhalation and minor burns before being conveyed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

Another person from a separate unit in the block also reported feeling unwell and was taken to SGH. No further casualties were reported.

As a precautionary measure, about 50 residents were evacuated from the affected block by the Police while the firefighting operations were underway.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was of electrical origin.

Box 4

SCDF has reminded the public to avoid overloading electrical outlets, switch off appliances when not in use, and regularly check for frayed wires or cracked cords.

Other safety advisories included avoiding running wires under carpets or mats, using appliances with the official Safety Mark, and not leaving devices charging unattended or overnight.

The incident comes amid a series of residential fires in Singapore in recent weeks.

On 22 August, three people were hospitalised after a fire involving a personal mobility device (PMD) erupted in a flat at Lorong 5 Toa Payoh.

A day earlier, on 21 August, three people were also taken to hospital following a blaze in a Bukit Purmei flat.

Earlier this month, two people died after being found unconscious in a Jalan Bukit Merah flat, with preliminary findings suggesting a PMD battery pack may have sparked the fire.

On 22 July, a fatal blaze in Toa Payoh claimed two lives when a man and a woman were discovered unconscious in their unit and pronounced dead at the scene.

SCDF statistics show that eight people have died in fire-related incidents so far in 2025.

This compares with five deaths in 2024 and three in 2023, marking the highest toll in three years.

The agency continues to urge residents to adopt fire safety precautions, particularly with the use of electrical appliances and PMDs, to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
