A fire broke out on the afternoon of Friday, 20 June 2025, at an unoccupied accommodation block within the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong, according to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). The incident triggered a fire alarm at 1.51 pm.

BMTC staff who heard the alarm and observed smoke in the area responded promptly. They managed to extinguish the fire without the need for external firefighting assistance at that point. No staff or trainees were injured in the incident, MINDEF confirmed in response to media queries.

“A fire was promptly extinguished by BMTC staff who had heard the fire alarm and spotted the smoke,” the spokesperson stated. MINDEF added that the building was unoccupied at the time, and that swift action had prevented any escalation or harm.

A video that has been widely circulated on social media platform TikTok shows the interior of a scorched bunk. The footage features soot-blackened walls and ceiling, as well as overturned mattresses and exposed electrical wiring. A man can be seen using a water hose, presumably to cool down the affected area or control lingering heat.

The video’s caption suggested that the affected unit was part of Viper company. However, this detail has not been confirmed by MINDEF, and the ministry has not provided the specific identity of the company or block involved.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has confirmed that it is working closely with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) to investigate the cause of the fire. At this point, no details about what may have triggered the blaze have been released.

“The SAF remains committed to upholding high standards of fire safety to ensure a safe environment for our service personnel,” the spokesperson said. “As the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide further comments at this juncture.”
