SINGAPORE, 3 JULY 2024The Coach Education and Development (CED) Department conducted the 2024 FAS Introductory Coaching Course in collaboration with Republic Polytechnic. Designed specifically for the institution’s full-time and part-time students, alumni, and lecturers enrolled in the Diploma in Sport Coaching, this course aimed to prepare aspiring coaches for the demands of higher-level coaching certifications. Held on the premises of Republic Polytechnic, this Introductory Coaching Course also serves as a prerequisite for the FAS/AFC ‘C’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 1 Full Integration) Coaching Course.

Held from 25 to 27 June, the event saw the participation of 24 attendees who were eager to learn and grow in their coaching careers. The course provided a blend of theoretical and practical training. Participants delved into topics such as the “Coaching Process” and “Coaching Methods,” and engaged in practical sessions covering “S.M.I.L.E.S.” and “Components of Progressive & GAG.

The course was delivered by Lead Coach Developer, Mr. Shasi Kumar, and Assistant Coach Developer, Mr. Isa Haleem. Mr. Shasi Kumar remarked, “It was a pleasure conducting this course for students, alumni, and lecturers from Republic Polytechnic’s Diploma in Sport Coaching. We saw some good potential in the group. It is important now that the course participants go out there and start coaching and learning from mentors on the ground. Experience is the best teacher. This will help them decide if they want to pursue coaching seriously.”

Reflecting on the experience, course participant Mr. Idraki Na’imullah Muhd Irwan shared, “The FAS Introductory Coaching Course has been a great way for me to improve as a football coach. I’ve learnt many new things not just from both Coach Developers but from the other coaches participating in the course. This course taught me the basics of coaching and what it takes to be a coach. Through this course, my coaching skills have elevated.”

 

Mr. Mohamed Iqbal Bin Hamid Hussain, another participant, added, “I feel that the course is beneficial for me and the rest of my course participants as it helps to groom us as future coaches. The knowledge and experience shared by the Coach Developers really help us learn and understand what it takes to be better coaches. I also believe it’s an important course to start out for all individuals who want to be a coach as you will learn the basics and gradually make your way through the coaching process in the future. Thank you, FAS, for providing this course to me and the other participants as it has truly been a wonderful learning experience.”

As a crucial next step, participants will undergo a minimum six-month mentorship under an approved FAS/AFC ‘C’ Diploma holder or equivalent. This period will provide them with practical coaching experience, further solidifying their skills and preparing them for the next stage in their coaching journey.
