SINGAPORE, 13 SEPTEMBER 2024 – The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today announced that Chew Chun-Liang has been appointed as its General Secretary with effect from November 2024.
This announcement marks Chew’s return to football having previously served as a Chief Executive Officer for the Lion City Sailors from 2020 to 2022. He is Deputy Chief, Care Systems Integration Division, at the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) where he is currently serving notice.
FAS President Mr. Bernard Tan said: “I am pleased to welcome Chun-Liang as the new General Secretary of the Football Association of Singapore. His proven leadership across diverse fields including his distinguished service with the AIC and his time at Lion City Sailors positions him as the ideal candidate to lead FAS at this critical juncture.
“Chun-Liang understands the challenges we have before us. Given his previous work in football, he knows the stakeholders, and is familiar with the issues. We expect him to make a running start in guiding the FAS under his watch.”
During Chew’s tenure at the Sailors, the Singapore Premier League side established its Sports Science department, put in place a structured youth development pathway alongside the implementing of fan and community engagement protocols and an ever-improving Women’s programme.
The club also won their first-ever league title in 2021 and opened the country’s first-of-its-kind $10 million integrated training facility in Mattar Road in 2022.
His proven track record extends beyond football. In the eldercare space, he was instrumental in driving several national programmes in AIC over the years, including the implementation of the active ageing centre programme and the Merdeka Generation Package outreach.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to FAS President, Bernard Tan and the FAS Executive Committee for entrusting me with the role of General Secretary and to continue to drive changes that are being implemented in the ecosystem,” said Chew.
“This is also what I worked on at the Sailors, and my time at Mattar Road has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the fraternity. It is clear to me that football holds a special place in the hearts of Singaporeans, in the conversations that I’ve had with stakeholders of the sport, I’m confident that I will be able to contribute to steering the organisation in the direction that Bernard, the FAS council, and Singaporeans want football to head towards.
“I will be building atop a foundation that Yazeen helped lay, and I hope to continue the good work in a manner that will see Singapore football grow even more in the years ahead.”
