TAIWAN: On 19 May 2025, a car driven by a 78-year-old man ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
The incident took place at an intersection near Bei Da Elementary School (北大國小) around 4pm, where many students were crossing.
According to Taiwan media, the driver ran a red light before ramming into pedestrians.
Three people died: two 12-year-old female junior high students and a woman in her 40s.
Fifteen others were injured, including at least eight children. One of the injured was a kindergartener.
Several victims were in critical condition, suffering head trauma, fractures, and lacerations.
Dashcam footage shows the car speeding past motorcyclists and crashing into the group.
An eyewitness described seeing the vehicle “speed like it was racing” before striking students and others.
According to police, the driver hit three scooters and a bicycle before crashing into a traffic island.
The man tested negative for alcohol and is in a coma, unable to respond to questioning.
The Ministry of Transportation confirmed he passed a senior driver test on 20 February and renewed his licence, valid until 2028.
Police are investigating whether mechanical failure, a medical episode, or driver error caused the crash.
Authorities also said the man may have reversed into two vehicles at a previous intersection before accelerating toward the scene.
