Chinatown Singapore prepares to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival from June 7th to 9th, 2024, along Smith Street. Organized by the Chinatown Business Association (CBA) in collaboration with various partners, this vibrant event promises an unforgettable experience for all.
Exploring Tradition and Culture
Delve into the origins and cultural significance of the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, through a series of engaging activities. Learn the art of making traditional Hainanese rice dumplings, discover the history behind dragon boat races, and immerse yourself in the captivating performances of lion dances, dragon dances, Guzheng music, and Cantonese Opera.
Honoring Tradition, Making Memories
The festival, deeply rooted in Chinese heritage, pays homage to Qu Yuan, a revered poet and statesman from ancient China. Originating from southern China, the festival evolved from the worship of the river dragon to commemorate Qu Yuan’s patriotism and sacrifice during the Warring States period.
Interactive Exhibitions and Workshops
Experience the festival’s essence at the “Dragon Boat Festival: Of Thumping Drumbeats and Delicious Dumplings” exhibition, hosted by CBA in collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. Uncover the festival’s history, the significance of rice dumplings across different Chinese dialect groups, and the evolution of dragon boat races.
Participate in hands-on workshops such as the Hainanese Bak Chang workshop, where you can learn to craft pyramid-shaped rice dumplings filled with savory delights. Alternatively, embark on a journey of wellness and tradition at the “A Sip of Heritage with Rice Wines” workshop, exploring the health benefits of rice wine and mastering the art of making sweet, fermented rice wine.
