DHL Group is strengthening its electric vehicle (EV) logistics and supply chain solutions in the Asia Pacific region with the launch of three new Electric Vehicle (EV) Centers of Excellence (COEs) in Shanghai, Singapore, and Indonesia.

These centers aim to support the increasing demand for EV logistics, offering end-to-end solutions across the entire EV supply chain.

The EV COEs are part of DHL’s broader Strategy 2030, which prioritizes the New Energy sector as a key growth area.

With Asia projected to account for 63% of the 115 million new EVs sold worldwide in the next five years, DHL is positioning itself as a key logistics partner for the industry’s expansion.

EV Centers of Excellence: A network of expertise

The newly established COEs will serve as knowledge hubs, showcasing DHL’s EV logistics expertise and capabilities.

These centers are integrated into DHL’s global network of EV COEs across 10 countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates.

“When people think of EVs, they often focus on the finished vehicles. However, the EV value chain is complex and requires a seamless logistics ecosystem. Our advantage as DHL Group is our ability to offer customized solutions across every segment, leveraging our expertise and global network,” said Audrey Gerard, Vice President of Auto-Mobility, Asia Pacific, DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation.

DHL plans to establish additional EV COEs in other key EV markets, including India, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand, to further strengthen its regional capabilities.

Comprehensive EV logistics solutions

The COEs will offer modular and integrated logistics solutions across various segments of the EV supply chain:

  • Capital equipment and battery materials for gigafactories: DHL supports companies involved in mining EV battery minerals and manufacturing by managing capital equipment logistics and the supply of essential battery materials such as electrolytes and processed minerals.
  • Inbound-to-manufacturing (I2M) for EV assembly plants: DHL provides door-to-door transport and storage for EV batteries and components, with control towers monitoring temperature, humidity, and geolocation to ensure safety and performance. The company also manages in-plant logistics, including materials processing, storage, and kitting.
  • Finished EV logistics: DHL offers vehicle-in-container solutions for mass market distribution and air freight services for prototypes and critical shipments. In 2024, DHL successfully transported prototype EVs from China to Europe, handling dangerous goods checks and export clearance.
  • EV aftermarket solutions: DHL manages aftermarket networks for various Western and Asian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This includes operating regional and local parts distribution centers in India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The company has also developed EV-specific solutions, such as shared storage facilities and time-definite deliveries to dealerships.

Future focus on battery repurposing and recycling

As the EV industry matures, there is an increasing need for logistics solutions related to repurposing or recycling end-of-life EV parts and batteries.

DHL is exploring advanced logistics models based on its experiences in Europe and the Middle East to support this emerging segment.

“This segment will require complex logistics support, which we are leveraging in the region through solutions implemented in our European and Middle Eastern networks, as well as our market-leading cross-border road freight network in ASEAN,” said Fathi Tlatli, Global Auto-Mobility Sector President, DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation.
