Perched at the entrance to the Hawkesbury River, laid-back Dangar Island sprawls over just 30ha. The car-free island is home to bushland – tall palms and purple jacarandas are rampant – over 100 animal species and swathes of hidden beaches. It’s also a significant site particularly for the Dharuk people who used the island for fishing and ceremonial purposes; you’ll findevidence of this through Aboriginal rock carvings especially in Kiparra Park. Grab a coffee at the Dangar Island Depot or lunch with locals at the Bowling Club.
