SINGAPORE: Chinese news veteran Chua Chim Kang (蔡深江) has stepped down from his role at Mediacorp, the broadcaster confirmed on 12 February.
Chua, who joined Mediacorp in 2018, cited personal health reasons for his decision to temporarily step away from his professional commitments to focus on recovery.
In his departure statement, Chua shared with 8World News that while the decision was a difficult one, prioritising his health was necessary.
He expressed immense gratitude for the time he spent at Mediacorp, calling it both fulfilling and invaluable.
“I am truly honoured to have worked alongside a professional and dedicated team, collaborating on many meaningful projects,” he added.
Following his exit, Mediacorp appointed Wee Wai Lin (黄惠玲) as the new head and chief editor of its Chinese news and current affairs units.
Wee, who has been with Mediacorp for over 35 years, previously served as the chief editor of the company’s Chinese current affairs division.
Her new role is expected to drive the strategic development and expansion of digital content within the organisation’s Chinese news offerings.
“The Chinese news and current affairs team will further strengthen and expand digital content on an already solid foundation, providing audiences with a wider range of choices while making greater contributions to the promotion of the Chinese language and local Chinese culture,” Wee said in her statement.
Chua’s departure comes amid ongoing legal proceedings.
He and former media professional Lee Kuan Fung are currently being sued by businessman Ren Xin Wu (任新武), who is seeking repayment of a S$990,000 interest-free loan.
The loan was reportedly extended in 2017 for a venture named Homing Holdings, which aimed to promote Mandarin use in Singapore.
Ren, a Canadian national originally from China, alleges that both Chua and Lee breached the agreement to repay the loan, with Ren accusing Lee of mismanaging the company.
Before joining Mediacorp, Chua had an extensive career with Singapore Press Holdings, where he spent 18 years, with his last position being the chief editor of the now-defunct evening daily Lianhe Wanbao.
Despite the current legal challenges, Chua expressed gratitude for his time at Mediacorp.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunities Mediacorp has given me and for the support from my colleagues,” he told 8World News.
