INDONESIA: A 70-year-old Singaporean man was found dead in his home in Batam, Indonesia, after neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the property.
The deceased, identified as Kamal Bin Ahmad, was discovered in a state of decomposition at his residence in Masyeba Gading Mas Residential Area, Sekupang, Batam, on Saturday (7 June), as reported by local news outlet TribunBatam.
The discovery was made around 4pm (Western Indonesian Time).
Local police believe Kamal had been dead for about five days before his body was found.
Early investigations revealed that he had been suffering from multiple serious health conditions.
“Inside the house, officers found several types of medication along with a medical certificate from Singapore,” police said on Sunday (8 June).
The medications included Atorvastatin, Vitamin C, Glucosamine Sulfate, Harnal Ocas, Dermasone, and Panadol Extra.
According to the Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Sekupang Police, Inspector Ridho Lubis, information gathered from neighbours supported suspicions that Kamal had long been suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
“Neighbours grew suspicious when they hadn’t seen him for almost a week. The situation escalated when they began noticing a foul smell, prompting them to contact the local security team,” Ridho explained.
Security personnel then alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and forced entry into the house.
Kamal’s body was found lying on his right side, wearing only a floral-patterned shirt with no trousers, already in an advanced stage of decomposition.
His remains were subsequently transported to Bhayangkara Hospital at the Riau Islands Police Headquarters for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Police said they would not speculate on whether Kamal’s death was due to illness or possible foul play until the results of the medical examination are available.
They have contacted Kamal’s wife, who is currently in Singapore, urging her to travel to Batam to assist with further arrangements.
