SINGAPORE: The decomposing body of a 77-year-old woman was discovered in her Bedok South flat on 25 May, after her downstairs neighbours noticed blood leaking from their ceiling and a foul stench.

The incident occurred around 2.05pm at Block 163 Bedok South Road.

According to Shin Min Daily News, a family living directly below the unit noticed blood dripping from their master bedroom ceiling and alerted authorities.

The deceased, affectionately known by neighbours as “Nancy”, had reportedly lived alone in the flat for more than two decades. Her body was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

Zeng, 70, one of the affected residents, told reporters that her son first spotted the blood around 1pm and immediately alerted her.

“I saw blood dripping and even smelled a foul odour,” she said.

“We realised something was wrong, so we went upstairs and found the victim’s sister standing outside the unit. We persuaded her to call the police.”

Police arrived soon after. By 4pm, the corridor had been cordoned off, and a crime scene investigation vehicle was parked at the foot of the block.

Residents said the smell on the upper floor was overpowering.

Ou, 72, Zeng’s husband, said the lingering odour had made it difficult for them to stay in their flat.

“The smell is unbearable. We will sleep in the guest room first and contact the authorities later to see how to solve the problem,” he said.

Neighbour Salama, 61, recalled that Nancy’s sister had come by earlier at around 10am but received no response when she knocked.

“I got home at around 11am and she asked me if I’d seen Nancy. We knocked on the door and could already smell a stench coming from inside,” he said.

Another resident shared that a food delivery bag had been left hanging on Nancy’s doorknob for two days — a possible early indication that something was amiss.

Nancy’s sister later attempted to retrieve a spare key but was unsuccessful. She engaged a locksmith, who declined to open the door after detecting the strong smell.

It was only after the downstairs neighbour reported the blood seeping through the ceiling that she decided to alert the authorities.

An undertaker’s vehicle arrived around 6pm to remove the body.

In response to media queries, the police confirmed that they received a report and found the woman lying motionless in her flat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations have ruled out foul play. Police investigations are ongoing.
