BG Tampines Rovers enter the new season with one of the Women’s Premier League’s youngest squads, averaging 21.2 years of age, with half the team making their top-flight debuts after progressing through JSSL, the club’s official football development partner that oversees youth development. With a strong emphasis on nurturing young talent while remaining competitive, the club continues to build its identity, resilience and cohesion.
From the Camp
Hafeez Shahni, Head Coach

On building a pathway-driven squad
“We do have a younger squad, but more importantly, many of the girls come from our academy. I always wanted to ensure there is a pathway for them to play in the women’s game. This is the best time for them to play, and I am confident they can compete.”
On balancing youth and competitiveness
“With the senior players, they have been very nice to the younger ones. We have a good bunch, and I am looking forward to seeing them work together. Ultimately, our goal is to be able to compete in the league.”
On challenges of a young squad
“I am not very worried about physicality. I think the game will be good for them. The main challenge is that many of them are still in school. They have to juggle school, activities, homework and training. So my role is to help them manage their expectations, manage their time in school, and manage their time on the pitch.”
On growth through training and togetherness
“I always believe the younger ones can fit in nicely with the older ones. Through training sessions and friendly games, we have already seen how they are growing together. It is a nice group to have.”
Vivian Eng, Centre midfielder

On leading by example in a young team
“As one of the older players, my role is to be a role model for the younger ones. They have a lot of energy and ideas, but in terms of knowing when to give their best, when to be more efficient, knowing when to be more disciplined, that’s where, as the older player, I could set the tone and the intensity of the training.”
On leadership on and off the pitch
“On the field, it is about giving 100 percent and communicating well. Off the field, it’s to lead the younger ones on discipline, nutrition, rest, recovery and taking care of yourself as an athlete.”
On the evolution of the league
“The level of the league is higher now. The intensity is higher, and that means we need to be fitter and stronger in that sense. It is definitely a step forward, and I look forward to more improvement.”
On personal and team goals for the upcoming season
“For me personally, it is to stay fit, stay injury-free and continue being a role model. For the team, half of them are playing in the WPL for the first time. I want them to enjoy the game, to enjoy the intensity, and take something valuable away from the season.”
Aqilah Salihin, Defender

On her growth at Tampines
“I feel more confident over the past few years, both mentally and physically. I understand my position better now compared to when I first started playing.”
On supporting younger teammates
“With younger players coming in, I try to give them support on and off the field, advise them on how they can improve, and make them feel proud playing football, especially since it is still a male-dominated sport.”
On confidence and expectations for the season
“I feel more confident going into this season. I trust in my team, the coaches and the players. I hope we can [finish in] a better position than last season, or at least play better.”
