“Hide in plain sight, be one with the crowd,” says one of the Church’s principles Assassin's CreedBut sometimes, all the finer details go out the window, leaving no choice but to confront enemies head-on. to this end, Ubisoft Released a combat overview for Shadows of Assassin's Creedshowcasing the countless tools available in the game to efficiently clash blades with enemies.
We have covered it previously Stealth systemsthe latest from Ubisoft Blog post It details the basics of combat and promises a wide range of options available depending on the chosen character, whether the assassin is Naoe or the samurai Yasuke, and the preferred weapon used to dispatch enemies.
Being a large, heavily armored samurai, Yasuke unsurprisingly has more tools in his arsenal for combat, with five weapons to choose from, compared to the more stealth-focused Naoe, who only has three. Armed with a classic long katana, a Naginata Bullerm rifle, a heavy Kanabu war club and a Yumu bow or Teppō rifle for ranged attacks, Yasuke has greater flexibility when it comes to direct conflict.
Meanwhile, Naoe relies on quick attacks and movements, using katana, ball and chain weapon kusarigama as well as the option to dual-wield with her tanto and hidden blade combo. Both characters have access to each weapon's light and heavy attacks, and holding down their respective switch triggers a stance attack, which can break an enemy's guard.
However, the defense works a little differently for the two. While both can use directional dodges to avoid incoming strikes, only Yasuke can enter blocking mode, allowing him to resist both melee and ranged attacks. He can also dodge blows and, if timed correctly, briefly disorient the opponent and allow for counterattacks. Naoe has a similar deflection mechanic, which sees her spin around to the side of enemies once performed, allowing her to attack their flank, but also opening herself up to attacks from any surrounding enemies.
To complement combat, each character also has unique skills and abilities acquired throughout the game. These can range from manually activated moves to extensions of existing combos and are unlocked with mastery points earned from leveling up or defeating specific enemies.
Finally, more information has been provided about the different enemy factions present in the game, and they fall under the following categories:
- Outlaws
- Ishigaru's soldiers
- Ronin
- Samurai
- Samurai Daisho
- Guardians
Enemies have their own tactics, with the two mechanics highlighted in the post being flow attacks, which are short series of incoming strikes marked with a blue flash that must be blocked or deflected in quick succession, and unstoppable attacks, powerful strikes marked with a red flash that cannot be blocked or blocked. Blocked or deflected, and should be avoided instead.
With the latest combat overview, it appears that Shadows of Assassin's Creed Designed to suit different needs and play styles, not just stealth enthusiasts. While some may be understandably concerned that the series is straying too far from its original stealth-focused roots, the element of choice is always welcome, and for now, the future looks bright as the title approaches release.
