As part of Geylang International’s MOU with the Japanese football club to foster closer ties through training and cultural exchanges, these players received the opportunity to gain a first-hand insight into the Japanese coaching methods along with an introduction to their training facilities and also, immerse themselves in a cultural three-day homestay program with a local host family.

Accompanied by Under-15 coach Nor Azli, the trio also participated in a series of trainings and friendlies with the Yamaga academy team where they were exposed to the different playing styles and cold weather conditions. Nor, meanwhile, also conducted a training session for the Yamaga U15 team.

Sean Bai, General Manager of Geylang International said: “Youth development continues to remain the cornerstone of Geylang International’s mission as the club remains committed to unearth the next generation of football stars.

“Our annual collaboration with Matsumoto Yamaga, which dates back to 2016, has been a key highlight for our academy and underscores the strong relationship between both clubs. It highlights the productive technical sharing between both clubs, offers valuable experiences and impetus to our young talents, and strengthens our youth pipeline to the first team.”

Putera, who was selected for the program based on merit and character, said: “Japan is a beautiful country with great people and amazing culture. In terms of the football, it’s very fast pace and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.”

Chiow echoed Putera’s sentiments, saying: “It has been both fun and challenging, learning about Japanese football and playing under different weather conditions. It’s definitely a new experience which has also given me the opportunity to improve myself as a player.”

Andry, meanwhile, also believes the experience will put him in good stead as he continues to develop himself as a player.

“It was a good experience as I get to learn the difference between Japanese and Singapore football. I can now improve on what I’ve been lacking on and continue to mature as a footballer,” said the 15-year-old.

Apart from Matsumoto Yamaga, Geylang International is already in talks with other foreign partner clubs to formalise similar agreements where academy players can broaden their football exposure and development.

Ends.
