Lion City Sailors extended their winning run in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) with a 6-0 triumph over Geylang International last Friday (20 February), making it five wins in five games.

Ami Takeuchi opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a composed finish after receiving a cushioned pass from Sailors Girls Academy graduate Amelia Tan. Sailors’ 16-year-old forward Nur Ain Salleh doubled the lead in the 36th minute, racing clear to slot home from a perfectly weighted pass from Takeuchi.

Eri Kitagawa made it 3-0 in the 49th minute, capitalising on a loose clearance, before Farah Nurzahirah added a fourth in the 71st minute, lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper with composure.

Takeuchi struck again in the 72nd minute and completed her hat-trick in the 89th minute, taking her season tally to 15 goals.

Young Aerion starlets shine in 7-0 rout over Hougang

Still Aerion 7-0 Hougang | Jurong East Stadium | 20 February
(Anna Seng 16’, 30’, 48’, 62’, Zoey Chua 42’, Isabella Rose Edwards 45’+2, 58’)

Still Aerion’s younger stars stole the show in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) last Friday (20 Feb) with a 7-0 victory over Hougang United.

Forward Anna Seng broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, sliding a low finish past a couple of Hougang defenders after a precise cross from fellow forward Isabella Edwards on the left. The 18-year-old went on to add three more goals to her tally, on a remarkable evening.

Twenty-year-old forward Zoey Chua also got on the scoresheet in the 42nd minute, reacting quickest as a corner delivery caused mayhem in the box and slotting home.

But the most spectacular goal of the match came from 16-year-old Isabella, who had already set up two of Seng’s goals. Two minutes into first-half stoppage time, Seng backheeled a pass to Isabella, who smashed a screamer into the top-right corner.

Isabella then added another goal in the 58th minute with a composed finish over Hougang’s goalkeeper Tay Siew Yin for the seventh goal.

The win propels Aerion back into the top three of the WPL table.

Albirex extend winning streak, despite a spirited BG Tampines side

BG Tampines 0-5 Albirex | Choa Chu Kang Stadium | 21 February
(Emily Baranyay 24’, Ruriko Takashima 47’, 49’, 75’, 88’)

Albirex Jurong continued their dominant start to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) with a 5-0 victory over BG Tampines last Saturday (21 February). The BG Tampines side, who had suffered a heavy 12-0 defeat to league contenders Lion City Sailors the previous week, put up a better fight this time but fell to Albirex’s clinical finishing.

In the 24th minute, Albirex midfielder Emily Baranyay opened the scoring with a composed solo effort down the right flank. Albirex missed a few chances in the first half, with goalkeeper Haziqah Haszman making key saves and the Tampines defensive line under pressure – notably 34-year-old Sharifah Amira producing a vital sliding clearance in the 44th minute – as Albirex led 1-0 at the break.

Just after the restart, Albirex’s firepower came to the fore. Player-coach Kana Kitahara delivered a perfectly weighted long ball to Ruriko Takashima, who finished past Haziqah who had come off her line too early. Takashima went on to add three more goals, completing a four-goal haul and taking her season tally to 20 goals, making her the current top scorer of the season.

Albirex remain on top of the WPL standings, ahead of the Sailors on goal difference.

Early strike seals Tanjong Pagar’s first win of the season

Tanjong Pagar 1-0 Tiong Bahru | Bukit Gombak Stadium | 22 February
(Nuriah Noor 10’)

An early strike was all Tanjong Pagar United needed to earn their first win of the season in last Sunday’s (22 February) against Tiong Bahru at Bukit Gombak Stadium.

Just 10 minutes in, a long ball from Tanjong Pagar United defender Crystal Wu found her captain Nuriah Noor, who flicked it over Tiong Bahru goalkeeper Lynse Ng — who had come too far off her line — to give Tanjong Pagar an early lead.

For the rest of the match, Tanjong Pagar created a few chances but were unable to convert, with Lynse making up for her earlier mistake under constant pressure from Jaguars’ attacks. Tiong Bahru’s defensive line was tested, particularly in the 43rd minute, while Nurzaherra Maisarah came close at the other end with a scissor-kick effort that flew just over the crossbar.

Tanjong Pagar’s long-ball attempts also often went off target, as both sides tried to extend the lead. Despite the flurry of chances, neither team could find the back of the net again.

Tanjong Pagar: Vanessa Tan (GK), Naomi Tan, Nur Syakirah Jumain (Eden Smith 79’), Matthea Ashwini, Nuriah Noor (C) (Dewi Safira 88’), Alyssa Deanna (Abigail Goh 46’), Anupriya Subramanian, Denise Chu, Crystal Wu, Faradila Rafidi, Pan Shi Yu
Unused subs: Ilya Batrisyia (GK), Shayeerah Huq, Gan Hui Yi, Abigail Heng

Tiong Bahru: Lynse Sng (GK), Joey Cheng (C), Deanna Lim, Nellie Teow, Rabiatul Adawiyah (Yap Hui Xuan 83’), Ezyan Salan (Nursafura Ali 46’), Nurzaherra Maisarah, Tang Kai Qing (Claris Gan 46’), Christine Gan, El’rine Alisha (Liew Tze Shyan 46’ (Wee Xin Yi 65’)), Ho Wen Jin
Unused subs: Larissa Ortmann (GK), Lee Lai Kuan, Badriyyah Yazid, Belina Moon
