Box 4

Hougang United put in a much-improved display to earn a draw against Tiong Bahru in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Saturday, as both sides shared the spoils at Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Saturday, 31 January.

Tiong Bahru, playing their first match of the season after a bye in the first weekend, saw much of the ball in the opening half, while Hougang remained compact at the back. Despite limited shots on target, Hougang stayed organised defensively, with 28-year-old defender Fatin Syarafana and the goalkeeper standing tall in the backline.

Tiong Bahru’s persistence was rewarded in the 47th minute when Player 14 lofted a pass into Lim Li Xian’s path. She eluded the attentions of two Hougang defenders, before calmly lifting the ball over the advancing Hougang goalkeeper to open the scoring.

However, Tiong Bahru’s lead was short-lived.

Ten minutes later, a misplaced pass out from the back was intercepted by a pressing Hougang attacker Deanna Lim who capitalised on the mistake to score Hougang’s first goal of the season.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but neither side was able to find the decisive breakthrough.

Hougang will sit out the next matchweek, while Tiong Bahru return to action against Balestier as they look to build on this result.

Late breakthrough separates Sailors and Still Aerion in tight encounter

Lion City Sailors 1-0 Still Aerion | Choa Chu Kang Stadium | 31 January
(Angelyn Pang 81’ O.G.)

Lion City Sailors edged past Still Aerion with a narrow 1-0 win on Saturday night at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, as an own goal proved the difference in a closely contested encounter.

Goalkeepers at both ends were called into action, with Sailors’ Izairida Shakira standing tall in key one-on-one moments, while Aerion’s Hazel Lim denied several close-range efforts to ensure the sides went in level at the break.

The breakthrough arrived in the 80th minute as Sailors captain Syazwani Ruzi’s cross was deflected into the net by Hougang’s Angelyn Pang under pressure from Sailors’ Izzati Rosni, ending Aerion’s unbeaten run against the Sailors from last season.

Aerion pushed forward in search of an equaliser late on, but the Sailors defence held firm as the match ended 1-0.

Albirex Jurong climbed to the top of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) table after a commanding 17-0 win over Balestier Khalsa on Saturday, overtaking Lion City Sailors by 12 goals on goal difference following their 16-0 victory earlier in the week.

Albirex wasted little time asserting control, with an eye on surpassing the Sailors’ on goal difference at the top of the table. The opening goal arrived just four minutes in when Manami drove in from the left flank, weaving past two defenders before sliding the ball past the Balestier goalkeeper.

The floodgates soon opened, with eight different players getting on the scoresheet. Manami Fukuzawa completed a hat-trick, while Anaya Sehgal, Siti Wan Nabilah, Sitianiwati Rosielin, and Ruriko Takashima each grabbed braces. Natasha Kaur also netted her first goal in Albirex colours, and player-coach Kana Kitahara leading the scoring with an impressive five-goal haul.

Balestier continued to battle but were unable to contain Albirex’s attacking pressure throughout the match.

Albirex will look to build on this momentum when they face Still Aerion next week, while Balestier Khalsa will need to regroup quickly after suffering back-to-back heavy defeats as they turn their attention to a clash against Tiong Bahru.

Geylang bounce back with impressive win over Jaguars

Geylang International returned to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Tanjong Pagar United on Saturday, 31 January in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

The opener came four minutes in when Geylang’s 18-year-old British midfielder Lily Claton found space in a scramble and slotted the ball home.

In the 28th minute, a Clayton flick from was initially caught by Tanjong Pagar goalkeeper Batrisyia Ilya, but she lost control, allowing Geylang forward Naureen Qadriyah to double the lead.

Tanjong Pagar pulled one back before the break when captain Nuriah Noor’s free kick was flicked over the goalkeeper by teammate Nur Syakirah for Tanjong Pagar’s first goal of the season.

Geylang restored their two-goal cushion in the second half through a brilliant left-footed strike from 17-year-old Naureen in the 60th minute, before provider Rochelle Chan got on the scoresheet herself in the 80th minute as the ball bounced in off the crossbar. A late penalty was awarded in stoppage time after Nuriah was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, but Geylang captain Farhanah Ruhaizat was unable to convert.

Tanjong Pagar also had their moments, with Batrisyia producing several key saves to keep the scoreline in check. The Jaguars will now look to bounce back next Saturday, where they face a tough test against title contenders Lion City Sailors, while Geylang will face BG Tampines Rovers in the season’s first Eastern derby next Friday.
