At a Glance

Tanjong Pagar United head into the new Women’s Premier League (WPL) season with continuity, resilience and long-term commitment. Tanjong Pagar are led by one of the league’s longest-serving coaches and players, and the club continues to prioritise development, discipline and character amid constant squad turnover and structural challenges.

After finishing sixth last season and conceding fewer goals than several higher-ranked teams, Tanjong Pagar look to build steadily once again, driven by fight and a strong sense of togetherness.

From the Camp

Samawira Basri, Head Coach

On the reality of long-term rebuilding
“Over the years, there has been improvement, but we are still developing. Whatever players we have, we develop them. We focus on improving their technical ability and their character.”

On what success looked like in context
“We don’t have top quality players compared to others, but we managed to concede fewer goals than some of the top three or four teams. That is an achievement for me.”

On standards, discipline and fairness
“For me, I hope the young ones will take advice from their seniors and make sure they play more games. They will understand better and fight for their place. If you are good, your attendance is good, your discipline is good, you will play. If you are average, you have to work harder.”

On resilience built over many seasons
“Through my journey here, I built a lot of mental strength. Football is not all good days. There are many challenges, and I’ve gone through a lot of changes with players leaving and rebuilding. It taught me resilience and the importance of how I respond to change.”

On leadership and supporting teammates
“I don’t see my teammates by age. I see them as girls who are passionate about football. I give everyone the same respect and try to connect both on football and personal levels.”

On staying motivated year after year
“My motivation is to keep a healthy lifestyle. Football has been part of my routine since I was a student in polytechnic, and I found a way to insert it very nicely into my life. I’m grateful I still have the health and fitness to keep playing.”

On loyalty and the club culture
“It feels like a family and I always feel there’s something to build. On our highs, we enjoy it together. On our lows, we work our way up together.”

On goals for the season ahead
“My personal goal is to do better than last season, in fitness and contribution, and hopefully score more goals. For the team, we want to do better than last season and aim for a top-five placing. We know it won’t be easy, but just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s impossible.  It just takes more effort and time, and we’re willing to put in the effort and time for that.”
