SINGAPORE: A would-be visitor to Singapore asked whether it is “really” worth it to stay in Marina Bay Sands when she visits the city-state for her birthday in January. While she wants to go mostly because of the infinity pool, she’ll have to pay a pretty steep price.

In a post on r/askSingapore, u/Chemicalengg01 explained her “dilemma” this way: I’ve booked one night there on my birthday mainly because the girl in me wants to treat herself and get those iconic infinity pool photos. But when I convert the price into my home currency, it’s literally 80% of my entire month’s salary.”

She added that she doesn’t normally go for this type of splurge and that it’s the first time for her to consider something so expensive, which is why she’s having second thoughts about her booking.

She asked those who’ve actually stayed at MBS if the experience feels “special, or is it just hype?” Alternatively, she wondered if she could stay at the hotel another way, without having to check in.

“Or is it truly 100% no-entry unless you have the room key? I don’t want to regret blowing almost an entire month’s salary for something that lasts a few hours, but I also don’t want FOMO if it’s actually worth doing once in a lifetime.”

Many Reddit users have obligingly given her answers, and a number of commenters have told her they don’t think it’s worth it at the price she’ll need to pay.

“Not worth it. You will end up finding many people crowding in the same areas (by the edge) to take photos. I mean, how long can you soak in the view for? Unless I plan to book out the entire place, I will stick to Google Images for now.

Treat urself better, go for a spa, a nice meal. If you want to do something touristy in Singapore, may I introduce u to the zoo and oceanarium? Put up at a cheaper, but proper hotel just to rest ($250 a night is good enough),” one wrote.

“If you’re having any doubts, I wouldn’t bother. It’s a pool with a nice view, but it’s not an especially nice pool.

If you’d like to enjoy the view, then I’d suggest getting an evening drink at Ce La Vie. It’s the bar/club right next to the pool, so the view is the same, but you don’t need a room key. Get a fancy-looking drink, and you can get all the photos you want and keep that month’s salary,” another advised.

Others suggested less costly alternatives for a rooftop pool, such as JEN Orchard Gateway, and the post author herself said she was also considering Fullerton Bay Hotel, even if the view will not be as impressive as MBS’s.

“I would go for Fullerton Bay over MBS. It’s a luxury hotel that feels much smaller and intimate than the gargantuan casino Colossus of MBS, plus the Bay’s pool is nice, has views of MBS, and is not packed with people posing for the ‘gram,” one wrote.

Others suggested the Ritz-Carlton for its “great Marina Bay views.” /TISG
