The National Library Board (NLB) has launched a new online exhibition tracing the evolution and impact of Chinese reading clubs in Singapore, from their early beginnings in the 1990s to their vibrant presence today. Developed in partnership with several local reading clubs, including Xin Zhi Reading Club, Singapore’s first and longest-running Chinese reading club, the exhibition celebrates decades of community-driven efforts to promote Chinese literacy and culture.
The launch, held in conjunction with NLB’s 30th anniversary, was attended by around 120 guests, including reading club members, educators, and literary partners. Through archival photographs, publicity materials, and digital stories, visitors can explore how these clubs have nurtured a love for reading and connected generations of readers across the island.
Available in both English and Chinese, the exhibition is organised into three sections that look at the past, present, and future of Chinese reading clubs in Singapore. It also features profiles of 30 active clubs with diverse interests, from business literature to Chinese history, alongside thought pieces on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
As part of the launch, NLB also introduced a new School Reading Ambassadors initiative, where seven students from local polytechnics and junior colleges will work with NLB staff to develop programmes that inspire secondary school students to embrace Chinese reading and literacy.
This latest initiative adds to NLB’s growing suite of Chinese-language resources and programmes that support bilingualism and cultural appreciation. In 2024, NLB launched the Youth Readers Club for readers aged 17 to 25, and the Starry Rain Book House for students aged 13 to 17, both of which have received enthusiastic participation. Many of the new ambassadors have previously been part of these programmes, further continuing their passion for promoting Chinese literature among peers.
NLB’s efforts extend to families as well, with resources such as the “100 Must-Read Singapore Chinese Books Before Age 12” guide, developed in collaboration with early educators, teachers, and local authors including Patrick Yee and Edmund Chen. The guide spotlights works by Singaporean writers and offers personal insights from authors to help parents and children discover the joy of reading together.
