ExxonMobil has announced plans to reduce its Singapore workforce by between 10 per cent and 15 per cent and to relocate its corporate office to its Jurong site by the end of 2027.
The US-based energy major confirmed on 1 October 2025 that the cuts form part of a global restructuring plan.
The changes will reshape the company’s office-based organisation, with planning and design work still ongoing.
According to ExxonMobil Singapore, the restructuring aims to strengthen long-term competitiveness.
“We are making changes to how we work so we can improve our competitiveness in an ever-evolving landscape and position the business for future success,” the company said in a statement.
The reduction in headcount, once implemented, could affect up to 500 staff out of ExxonMobil’s current Singapore workforce of about 3,500 employees.
However, the company has not provided a precise number of redundancies.
The announcement followed ExxonMobil’s global disclosure earlier in the week that it would cut 2,000 jobs worldwide, especially in Canada and across the European Union.
This represents around 3 to 4 per cent of its global workforce.
ExxonMobil stated that it would offer support to employees facing redundancy.
“We will provide the necessary support to our people,” a company spokesperson told Singapore state media CNA on 1 October.
Despite the restructuring, the company emphasised it would maintain its manufacturing presence in Singapore.
ExxonMobil operates two major refining sites, at Pioneer Road and on Jurong Island, with a combined capacity to process 592,000 barrels of crude per day.
Earlier this month, the company commenced production at new facilities at its Singapore refinery complex.
The expansion allows it to produce base stocks from residue fuel, underscoring its continued industrial footprint in the country.
As part of the transition, ExxonMobil will move employees currently based at its HarbourFront office to expanded facilities at the Jurong refinery.
The relocation is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
The company noted that co-location of staff was expected to foster innovation and efficiency.
“We’ve seen the value of bringing people together in the same location,” ExxonMobil said, adding that the organisational redesign was intended to improve competitiveness, effectiveness, and innovation.
The Economic Development Board (EDB), Workforce Singapore (WSG), and the NTUC Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) will work with ExxonMobil to support affected staff.
These agencies are expected to assist with job placement and career transition services.
EDB said ExxonMobil will continue to maintain a significant business footprint in Singapore, including in manufacturing, HQ, and trading functions.
