SINGAPORE, 23 SEPTEMBER 2025 – A 20-strong Singapore Premier League (SPL) Selection contingent will travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this weekend for the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup 2025.
The team will face the Selangor Selection in the headline match at 9:00 pm on Saturday, 27 September 2025, at the Merdeka Stadium. The evening’s festivities will kick off with a match featuring Singapore legends against their Selangor counterparts at 8:00 pm.
Geylang International Head Coach, Noor Ali, who was originally named Head Coach of the SPL Selection, will be replaced by Albirex Niigata (S) Head Coach Keiji Shigetomi, who had been set to serve as Assistant Coach.
Noor is currently on medical leave after sustaining an injury, which also rules him out of the Singapore Veterans’ squad.
The Veterans’ squad will still feature familiar names, including Fandi Ahmad, Malek Awab and Aleksandar Duric, who will rekindle the rivalry with their Malaysian counterparts.
Shigetomi emphasised the need to get the players ready within a short period of time.
“We will do our best to achieve a positive result, and I hope the players can quickly build a good understanding with one another,” said the 46-year-old of the SPL Selection squad that includes senior players the likes of Albirex Niigata goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, Geylang’s Shakir Hamzah, as well as younger players like Hougang United’s Farhan Zulkifli.
Looking ahead to the occasion, Shigetomi also stressed the importance of strong fan support.
He said: “Most importantly, we are counting on our supporters to cheer the team on. Their encouragement can lift the squad’s spirit and give the players the courage to perform.”
