Mattar Sailors were crowned Women’s National League (WNL) champions for the second time after a thrilling finale that went right down to the wire.
Heading into the last round of fixtures, Mattar Sailors led the standings with 28 points, just one point ahead of Jungfrau Punggol. With everything still to play for, the Sailors needed victory against Royal Arion, while Jungfrau Punggol faced a tough test against Eastern Thunder, who were themselves chasing a strong finish.
Both matches were finely balanced at halftime. Mattar Sailors were frustrated by Royal Arion, while Jungfrau Punggol and Eastern Thunder were locked at 1–1. For a while, the title was balanced on a knife’s edge.
The breakthrough finally came in the 76th minute when Mattar Sailors struck to take the lead. Even then, the tension lingered until deep into stoppage time, when the Sailors scored again in the 90+2 minute to secure a 2–0 victory and seal the championship with 31 points.
Meanwhile, Jungfrau Punggol were unable to find a winner in their clash with Eastern Thunder, the 1–1 draw leaving them in second place on 28 points, with Eastern Thunder finishing third on 25 points.
There were standout individual performances across the season. Jungfrau Punggol’s Serena Bok claimed the top scorer award with 15 goals, just ahead of Nur Batrisyia of Kaki Bukit on 13. Mattar Sailors were the league’s most prolific side, scoring 51 goals, while also boasting the tightest defence with only eight goals conceded. Eastern Thunder, meanwhile, finished with the most clean sheets, registering six shutouts.
