A Singaporean man has been accused of brutally attacking his Malaysian employee at Plaza Sentosa in Johor Bahru on 6 September, leaving him with severe injuries to his face and hands.
According to The New Straits Times (NST), the suspect is a debt collector in his forties who also works as a social media influencer.
The victim, a 23-year-old Malaysian, had only been hired as his driver three days earlier.
The incident reportedly began after the driver was accused of stealing a vape.
China Press cited the victim’s older brother, who said a friend of the Singaporean told the driver to search for the vape under a table.
When he did so, the suspect allegedly launched a violent attack.
The Singaporean allegedly struck the driver on the head with a glass bottle, which shattered and caused further injuries.
The brother claimed the suspect then stabbed the victim in the left eye with the broken glass and attempted to attack his face and neck.
Despite the driver’s efforts to defend himself, he was severely injured.
“Nearly all my brother’s fingers needed stitches, and the tendon in his thumb was torn,” his brother told China Press.
Photos circulating online, purportedly of the victim, show him in hospital with deep lacerations on his head, hands and face, including a severely injured eye.
The brother also alleged that the Singaporean shouted death threats during the assault, threatening to kill both the victim and his family.
The victim filed a police report on 7 September, which was confirmed by the Johor Baru South police chief.
Authorities are investigating the matter as a case of causing grievous hurt and robbery with hurt.
The police chief stressed that investigators have only received one version of events.
“We only have one side of the story,” he said, noting that a clearer picture will emerge once the suspect is apprehended.
Suspect allegedly linked to debt collection agency
The suspect is believed to be associated with a Singapore-based debt collection agency, whose operations extend beyond Singapore to Malaysia — including Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and Penang — and Cambodia.
Attempts by NST to contact the agency by phone were unsuccessful, as no calls to its Singapore number have been answered.
Malaysian police have not released further details on the suspect’s identity but confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
