SINGAPORE: A sprinkler pipe burst at City Square Mall on 3 September evening, causing water to flood across its basement levels and spill into the underpass leading to Farrer Park MRT station.
The incident occurred at around 8pm at Basement 1 of the mall at 180 Kitchener Road.
Dark-coloured water sprayed across the floor, sending patrons scrambling to avoid it.
Videos posted on TikTok showed diners at the KFC outlet abandoning their meals as water pooled on the floor.
The liquid was later seen seeping into the passageway connecting the mall to Farrer Park MRT station.
City Square Mall issued an apology on Facebook on 4 September, stating, “Your safety and comfort is important to us. We apologise for the inconvenience that the burst sprinkler pipe caused last evening.”
The mall added that rectification works were underway at affected units but that most outlets at Basement 1 and Basement 2 remain open.
“We are doing our utmost to support our affected tenants and appreciate your understanding, patience, and continued support,” it said.
In response to media queries, the mall explained that its operations and security teams quickly redirected foot traffic after the incident. Cleaning teams were also deployed within minutes to clear the affected areas.
“The operations team deployed to the area identified the source to be a dislodged sprinkler pipe, and the related pump was promptly deactivated,” the mall said.
City Square Mall had only recently completed renovation works earlier in May 2025, according to a press release. No injuries were reported as a result of the flooding.
