Mediacorp, Singapore’s national media network and a wholly owned subsidiary of state investment firm Temasek, will retrench 93 staff members as part of a major restructuring initiative.

Box 2

The decision, announced on 1 September, 2025, affects slightly more than 3 per cent of the company’s total workforce.

In its official statement, Mediacorp stated that the retrenchment move is intended “to better align its operations amid ongoing economic and commercial uncertainty.”

The restructuring is organisation-wide, though the company did not specify which departments or functions would be most affected.

Affected employees have until 30 September to apply for alternative roles within the organisation.

Those who do not secure new internal placements by that date will have their employment formally concluded at the end of the month.

The retrenchment package includes one month’s salary for each year of service, capped at either 25 months of pay or S$250,000, depending on an individual’s tenure, salary level, and seniority within the company.

Chief Executive Officer Tham Loke Kheng acknowledged the difficulty of the move, stating:”This is a difficult decision and one not taken lightly. We are deeply grateful to our colleagues for their contributions, and our priority at this point is to ensure that those affected are supported with care, humility, and dignity during this transition.”

The Singapore Union of Broadcasting Employees (SUBE) issued a separate media statement confirming that it had been informed ahead of time about the staffing changes.

Union representatives will be present during the retrenchment exercise to offer guidance and assistance to affected workers and members.

SUBE also noted that it is working closely with NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to provide job matching services, career coaching, and skills advisory for those impacted.

The union emphasised that this support will extend to both Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents.
