Market Street Hawker Centre What to Eat & Best Food

Date:

Box 1

Market Street Hawker Centre is a recently reopened food centre in Singapore’s CBD in CapitaSpring. Despite the change in name, many CBD workers still call it “Golden Shoe” – owing from its origins from 1984 up until 2017 when the hawker centre was housed in a relatively low-rise carpark building called Golden Shoe. When that original building was demolished to make way for the construction of CapitaSpring, Market Street Hawker Centre moved to a site just beside Telok Ayer MRT Station where it stood for almost 5 years as the Market Street Interim Hawker Centre.

On 5th April 2022, Market Street Hawker Centre reopened as part of the gleaming CapitaSpring skyscraper with the food centre occupying the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building – just like it did during the Golden Shoe period. The reopened hawker centre houses 56 stalls – the same number it did back then, although some establishments have changed hands.

I have personally been visiting this particular hawker centre since its Golden Shoe days. When the interim market was set up, I had also frequented it due to its proximity to my workplace. When the food centre reopened in 2022, I was pleasantly surprised to find many of my favorite stalls intact despite the many changes over the years.

Yuguo Curry Rice

Box 3

The food here is greasy, salty and full of gravy but that doesn’t deter the long queues facing this stall every work day. I must admit, I am one of those people who come here for their filling and relatively generous portions. Although far from being the healthiest option at Market Street Hawker Centre, Yuguo Curry Rice attracts a steady stream of customers due to their tasty dishes as well as bigger variety, compared to other curry / economic rice stalls in the hawker centre.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:30AM to 8PM

Bee Kee Wanton Noodle

I first discovered Bee Kee Wanton Noodle when they were included in Mealpal as one of the lunch pickup establishments. I found their noodles quite springy while the char siew possessed a good degree of smokiness that went well with chili. Aside from this, they’re also known for Truffle Wanton Mee where the noodles are drenched in truffle oil. However, the portions here can be rather small so do consider ordering bigger portions for something more filling.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 7AM to 2:30PM

Salad Co SG

Salads/healthy food often cost a bomb in the CBD so Salad Co SG is a breath of fresh air with its wide array of healthy and guilt-free eats. One can select among toppings such as beetroot, broccoli, cabbage and even uncommon ones like aloe vera, smoked duck and feta cheese. They accept orders over Whatsapp so that customers don’t have to queue very long.

Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday, 10AM to 2:30PM

Tiong Bahru Roasted Noodle House

Tiong Bahru Roasted Noodle House attracts long queues during lunch time from patrons eager to have their roast chicken, roast pork or char siew along with springy noodles. Despite the CBD location, prices remain affordable and customers can expect generous servings. They are not to be confused with Tiong Bahru Wanton Mee located within the same hawker centre.

Stall Number: #03-20

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30AM to 2:30PM

Tiong Bahru Wanton Mee

Another Wanton Noodles stall to choose from in Market Street Hawker Centre is the equally popular Tiong Bahru Wanton Mee. Go for their signature Wanton Mee which has a myriad of toppings – including two types of fried dumplings to go along chunky pieces of char siew and wanton served in soup. This is one of the few stalls in Market Street Hawker Centre open during Saturdays.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 8AM to 3PM / Saturday, 7:30AM to 3PM

Ah Liang Ipoh Hor Fun

The longest queue at Market Street Hawker Centre is often from Ah Liang Ipoh Hor Fun. They are noted for their super silky strands of the flat noodle as well as the herbal taste to the sauce that separates them from other hor fun stalls. A plate usually consists of shredded chicken, prawns as well as fried fish dumplings – the latter often being considered the highlight of the dish due to the plump fish meat found within that goes well against the crispy skin. It is crispy if you manage to bite on it when it’s freshly cooked.

Opening Hours: Monday to Thursday, 10AM to 7:30PM / Friday, 10AM to 4PM

Yummy Nyonya

Yummy Nyonya is one of the better economic rice stalls in Market Street. As the name suggests, you will get much more than the standard cai png offering here with their standout dish being the Signature Ayam Rendang and Beef Rendang. As this is a “nyonya food” stall, expect prices to be higher than the usual economic rice stalls. Servings are also markedly smaller so I typically order 4 dishes whenever I am here. For those planning to use their CDC vouchers, do note that the stall does not accept the said vouchers even though the CDC website lists them there.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:30AM to 3PM

Sunrise Traditional Coffee and Toast

Sunrise has the longest queue among all the beverage stalls at Market Street Hawker Centre and for good reason, too. They placed 8th overall in a nationwide search sponsored by Marigold Dawn back in 2013 for the best coffee in Singapore. The local kopi at Sunrise is known for its smoothness and aromatic flavor. Prices are also decent and is among the most affordable kopi stalls in the CBD.

Stall Number: #02-15

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday, 6AM to 4PM

Golden Nur

Many CBD workers swear by the biryani at Golden Nur, topped by a meat selection comprising the likes of Curry Chicken and my personal favorite – Crispy Chicken. I especially enjoy the savory crispy bits that comes with the meat.

Stall Number: #03-11

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday, 7AM to 7PM

Sembawang Ah Huat Fish Soup Ban Mian

Chanced upon this stall as I was craving for fish soup one evening but most of the food stalls were already closed. Sembawang Ah Huat Fish Soup is situated near the far end of the 2nd floor and serves a rather predictable assortment of fish soup which can be had in the usual style or as tom yum. What’s notable here is that they have at least 6 types of carbohydrate to choose from – ranging from ee mee to bee hoon and you can even have mee hoon kueh with your fish soup if you wish, as this stall also sells ban mian.

Stall Number: #02-27

Coffee Break

Originating from Amoy Street Food Centre, Coffee Break has also opened an outlet at Market Street Hawker Centre. You can expect the same popular kopi flavors here such as black sesame, pumpkin spice, hazelnut and more. Their toasts also come in a myriad of flavors, the popular ones being black sesame and earl grey.

Stall Number: #03-03

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30AM to 2:30PM
