The four-match suspension issued to Balestier Khalsa FC player Masahiro Sugita for a 58th minute red card in the 7 May Singapore Premier League match against BG Tampines Rovers was rescinded following a thorough review by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Refereeing Technical Panel (RTP).

Box 2

This decision came following Balestier’s official protest lodged on 9 May.

Box 3

SPL clubs were informed of this decision that allowed Sugita to be selected for Balestier’s 11 May match against Brunei DPMM FC.

Review and Findings

Box 4

The RTP, chaired by Mr John Chia, conducted a detailed analysis of the incident, and after reviewing available video footage and applying the relevant provisions under Law 12 of the Laws of the Game, the panel concluded that although Sugita’s action was reckless, it did not involve excessive force or brutality, nor did it endanger the safety of the opponent.

The panel determined that a yellow card would have been the appropriate disciplinary action in this case.

Outcome

The following actions were then taken:

  • The one-match suspension imposed on Masahiro Sugita was rescinded.
  • The red card issued during the match shall remain on record, in line with standard competition procedures.

The Football Association of Singapore remains committed to ensuring decisions reflect the principles of fairness, accuracy, and the integrity of the game.
