Red Dot United (RDU) continued its steady grassroots campaign in Jalan Kayu on 30 March, 2025, with a team walkabout led by party member Kala Manickam at several well-frequented eateries in the area.
This followed a similar outreach the evening before, on 29 March, when Kala and six volunteers also walked the ground to engage residents—marking her second consecutive weekend of activity in the constituency.

The outreach, which lasted two hours, took place at popular dining spots that draw Singaporeans from all walks of life. These included coffee shops, restaurants, and hawker stalls familiar to many in the neighbourhood and beyond.
Though the team did not keep a formal count, RDU volunteers estimate that they engaged with hundreds of residents and patrons during the evening.
The reception from the public was described as warm and encouraging, with many residents openly welcoming the team and sharing their thoughts.
Kala, who has now visited the area two weekends in a row, said the conversations were sincere and often personal. “Most people were very forthcoming,” she noted. “They were happy to see us and spoke honestly about what matters to them.”
Among the key concerns raised during the walkabout were the rising cost of living and the need for more robust checks and balances on the government.
“These are issues that cut across demographics,” said Kala. “Whether young or old, people are feeling the pressures, and they want to see greater accountability in policymaking.”

These themes were also reflected in the informational flyers distributed by the RDU team, which addressed the importance of transparent governance and policies that better support everyday Singaporeans.
The team included notable volunteers such as former lawyer M Ravi and Mohamed Fazli Talip, an ex-member of the National Solidarity Party who joined RDU in 2020. Both figures were present and actively engaged with the public.
Kala shared a particularly memorable moment from the evening. “One resident came up to me and said he knew who I was. He told me I seemed down-to-earth and relatable, and that he would support me,” she recounted. “That kind of affirmation reminds me why I do this.”
RDU’s persistent presence in Jalan Kayu has fuelled speculation that Kala may be fielded as a candidate in the constituency, which was recently designated as a Single Member Constituency (SMC) following the latest electoral boundary changes.
While RDU Secretary-General Ravi Philemon has not confirmed any candidacies, he previously stated that the party would only announce its candidates closer to Nomination Day and Polling Day.
The Jalan Kayu SMC now includes parts of Sengkang West, an area that gained attention after the Workers’ Party won Sengkang GRC in the 2020 general election. The change has turned Jalan Kayu into a focal point for political activity.
On 28 March, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng was also seen visiting Sengkang West, suggesting that the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) may also be eyeing the constituency.
Red Dot United, formed in 2020 by former members of the Progress Singapore Party, has yet to secure a seat in Parliament. However, its continued activity in areas like Jalan Kayu signals a serious intent to contest in the upcoming election.
As the political landscape evolves, such grassroots engagement efforts are expected to intensify in Jalan Kayu and other key constituencies.
