The prosecution requested that Abdul Rani be remanded for medical examination and psychiatric evaluation to determine if he was suffering from any “abnormality of the mind that substantially impaired his mental responsibility” for the alleged act.

When asked if he had anything to say through a Malay interpreter, Abdul Rani, who was unrepresented, responded that he had nothing to say.

The judge ordered his remand for psychiatric evaluation, citing the seriousness of the charge. He will next appear in court on 3 April.

Residents in the block described the scene on Tuesday.

When reporters arrived, the unit was cordoned off, and a body bag was later removed.

One neighbour said that two men and two women lived in the flat but reported not hearing any disturbance before the incident.

Another resident witnessed a man sitting on a stool with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Under Singapore law, the offence of murder carries the death penalty. Investigations are ongoing.
