Prime Minister Lawrence Wong underscored the importance of diversity and unity in his first Chinese New Year message since assuming office last year. Delivered on 28 January 2025, the message encouraged Singaporeans to reach across racial and religious boundaries to strengthen mutual understanding and expand shared spaces.
“Diversity is our strength,” Mr Wong stated. “We may have different views on issues that matter deeply to us. But we cannot let our differences pull us apart.” He highlighted the growing polarisation worldwide, noting that Singapore’s unity is a “precious asset” that requires continued protection and nurturing.
Reflecting on security concerns, Mr Wong pointed to the increasing dangers in a volatile global landscape, including terrorism. He cited the Internal Security Department’s recent detentions of three self-radicalised individuals whose extremism was influenced by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The three Singaporeans had reportedly prepared for armed violence overseas.
Mr Wong stressed the need for vigilance against security threats and for mental preparedness should an attack occur. “If that were to happen, we must be able to stand together as one united people, resolute and undivided,” he said. Such challenges, he emphasised, should strengthen rather than weaken Singapore’s societal fabric.
Support for families and strengthening bonds
The prime minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting families, especially young couples and caregivers. Recognising the importance of stable housing, Mr Wong reaffirmed plans to increase the supply of Build-to-Order (BTO) flats, with about 19,600 units to be launched in 2025. Notably, 20 per cent of these will have waiting times of under three years, making housing more accessible and affordable for young families.
Leave arrangements are also set to improve. As announced during Mr Wong’s National Day Rally in August 2024, a new shared parental leave scheme will grant parents an additional 10 weeks of shared leave to care for their infants. This scheme is slated for full implementation by 1 April 2026. Furthermore, significant investments in preschool education aim to give every child a strong start in life, regardless of their background.
Recognising the challenges faced by caregivers, Mr Wong pledged more support for those balancing multiple responsibilities, such as caring for ageing parents, young children, or family members with special needs. “Caregivers play a vital role in strengthening family bonds,” he said, adding that government initiatives would seek to ease their burdens.
Supporting seniors and embracing the future
To address the needs of Singapore’s ageing population, Mr Wong outlined plans for programmes like Healthier SG and Age Well SG. These initiatives aim to keep seniors active, healthy, and connected to their communities. By promoting a holistic approach to ageing, the government hopes to enable seniors to enjoy their golden years with dignity and purpose.
This Chinese New Year holds special significance as it coincides with SG60, the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s independence. Reflecting on this milestone, Mr Wong called for a celebration of the nation’s achievements and a collective effort to honour the sacrifices of past generations.
“Sixty years marks a full cycle of life in Chinese culture,” he said. “It is therefore timely to reflect on how far we have come, honour the contributions and sacrifices of our pioneers, and build on their legacy to chart our next steps forward.”
As Singapore enters its next “life cycle,” Mr Wong urged citizens to move forward with courage and determination. “Together as one Singapore family, we can keep our nation a beacon of safety, security, and stability, amidst a troubled and volatile world.”
Singaporeans are encouraged to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a renewed commitment to harmony, unity, and resilience. With a diverse yet united society, the prime minister expressed confidence that the nation can overcome any challenges and continue to thrive.
