Seven people, including a firefighter and a child, were taken to hospital on 29 July, 2025, after a fire broke out in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Toa Payoh.
The blaze started in a flat on the 10th floor of Block 229 Toa Payoh Lorong 8 and later spread to another unit directly above on the 11th floor.
In an update on Facebook at 5.39pm, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said two people from the affected 10th-floor unit and three others from neighbouring units were assessed for smoke inhalation.
One of these individuals also suffered burn injuries.
All five were taken to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment.
In addition, a child from a neighbouring unit was assessed for smoke inhalation and conveyed to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
During the operation, a firefighter experienced fatigue and felt unwell while battling the flames. He was taken to SGH as a precautionary measure.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Earlier, SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at about 1.10pm. Upon arrival, the fire was raging and had completely engulfed the 10th-floor unit. Firefighters brought the blaze under control using two water jets.
Another team of firefighters forced entry into the 11th-floor unit located directly above the initial blaze. That fire was also extinguished using a water jet.
Saktiandi Supaat, Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, confirmed that the number of people taken to hospital had risen to seven.
Mr Saktiandi added that the firefighter was affected by smoke inhalation during the operation and was conscious when conveyed to hospital.
Footage shared by residents and passers-by showed thick, dark smoke pouring out of multiple windows of the affected flats.
Some window frames appeared severely warped and damaged due to the intense heat of the flames.
