SINGAPORE: A 44-year-old man was arrested for murder on 1 June 2025, after a 79-year-old woman was found dead in Sengkang.
Police received a call at 11.50am about an incident at a Fernvale Road flat. The woman was found lying motionless and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The suspect was arrested at the unit. Preliminary investigations revealed both parties were known to each other.
He is scheduled to be charged on 3 June with murder, an offence that carries the death penalty in Singapore.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, the man allegedly beat his 79-year-old mother to death with his bare hands and then attempted to stage the scene to resemble an accidental fall.
The report also stated he calmly contacted a funeral services provider afterwards.
Local undertaker Roland Tay told Zaobao that a man identifying himself as “Ling” had called at around 10.30am on 1 June, requesting a doctor to certify a death.
Tay said he asked about the mother’s condition. The caller claimed she had fallen and was bleeding.
“I said I could call a doctor, but he needed to tell me his mother’s condition. He said his mother had fallen and was bleeding. Based on my decades of experience, in such cases, the police or 995 should definitely be called, so I advised him to do that.”
Tay said he later tried to call back but could not reach the man. Police contacted him later for further information.
Zaobao also reported that the mother and son reportedly had a strained relationship and often argued.
A neighbour said they had only moved into the unit about a month ago. The son was described as quiet, but loud arguments were frequently heard from the unit.
The night before the incident, one neighbour reported hearing loud banging sounds from the flat that grew more intense and continued into the early hours. She did not think much of it at the time.
Another resident living below the unit said that for over a week, noises such as knocking and the sound of furniture being dragged were frequently heard around 11pm. These occurred about every 10 minutes and lasted for around half an hour.
