SELANGOR, MALAYSIA: A 41-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter were found drowned at Pulau Ketam, Selangor, Malaysia, on 6 August 2025.
According to Malaysian police, the incident occurred at approximately 6.42am.
CCTV footage reportedly showed the pair jumping into the sea from a pavilion next to the island’s volunteer fire brigade building.
Local media reported that the woman was a resident of Shah Alam and had been working in Singapore.
She and her daughter had checked into a hotel on the island the day before the incident.
Deputy police chief of Klang Selatan, Superintendent Kamalariffin Aman Shah, stated that the bodies were discovered around 7.30am near the island’s jetty.
He said a 56-year-old local man first spotted the child floating in the water in front of the jetty.
“With the help of several members of the public, the complainant managed to bring the child ashore. Police and health clinic staff who arrived at the scene confirmed that the child had died,” Kamalariffin said in a statement.
Former Pulau Ketam village head, Chua Chuan Tie, told local press that the woman and child had been seen at the pavilion earlier that morning.
Emergency services responded promptly after receiving the alert.
Despite attempts to resuscitate the girl with CPR, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother was also recovered from the sea but was found unresponsive.
A search of the area led to the discovery of a bag containing documents identifying the deceased as a 41-year-old local woman and her daughter.
Kamalariffin said a preliminary examination conducted by the Selangor police forensics unit found no injuries on either of the bodies.
The bodies have been transported to Klang General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police stated that no criminal elements have been identified so far. A sudden death report has been opened to facilitate further investigation.
