SINGAPORE: A 38-year-old woman who lived alone in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Tampines was found dead after neighbours detected a foul odour lingering for several days.
Police were alerted at around 8am on Monday (29 Sept) to a unit at Tampines Street 43, Shin Min Daily News reported.
The woman was found lying motionless in the flat and was pronounced dead at the scene.
When reporters arrived at the block at around 11am, several police vehicles were seen parked below.
Officers had cordoned off the affected fourth-floor unit for investigation and evidence collection.
A resident, Chen (transliteration), 74, said the deceased had moved into the block about two years ago.
She had initially been staying with a friend, but after they quarrelled in 2024, she ended up living alone.
Chen said it had been weeks since he last saw her.
On Monday morning, unable to tolerate the stench any longer, he contacted the authorities.
Police arrived soon after and discovered the body.
Another neighbour, Ho (transliteration), 66, described the deceased as someone who largely kept to herself and had minimal interaction with other residents.
Ho added that the deceased was unemployed and that her friends and family visited her every few months to bring food.
According to her, residents had noticed the odour for three to four days before the body was discovered.
“We thought there was a dead rat nearby, so we didn’t give it much thought. But it turned out that she had died at home,” she told Shin Min.
Ho also noted that rubbish bags outside the woman’s unit had not been cleared for about two weeks.
Police said that based on preliminary investigations, foul play is not suspected.
Investigations are ongoing.
